2023 TRANSlations is a hybrid festival featuring unforgettable features, shorts, and events that celebrate all things trans. Our theme this year is TRANS THROUGH TIME because trans folks have always been here and always will be. Get pumped for a whole new slate of films that depict the array of trans experiences!

The festival will be available to stream virtually anywhere in the U.S. May 4-7. You can also join us for in-person screenings and events at Ark Lodge Cinemas and The Beacon Cinema May 5 & 6. This is our first year taking over the Columbia City neighborhood and we're really excited to connect with new audiences there.

“Bill's work is intimate, personal and probing. There is a corporeal relationship with the camera that begins with a question, like a traditional interview or a casual dialogue. This temporary or rather “seasonal” interaction with characters and landscapes, triggers a hypothetical proposal about human behavior, masculinity and vastness, in relation to the nature that surrounds it. With his camera, Bill transgresses the observation space to turn it into a performative one in which his presence becomes evident.”

Children of the Moon is a programme of selected works by Queer/Trans BIPOC artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, First Nations and their descendants. The Mercury Sign is a new version of this programme that focuses on the collective voice of a community that moves beyond the cis heteronormative universe. The astrological sign of Mercury has been reappropriated by the trans and queer community to represent gender-fluidity and non-heterosexuality, but it has also been used to symbolize the power of self-determination. The short films selected showcase a variety of forms challenging the traditions of genres in cinema.

"In 2020, Chileans democratically voted to write a new constitution that would replace the one imposed in 1980 under Pinochet’s dictatorship. This new civil consciousness of the Chilean people was triggered by a popular movement that manifested vividly with massive protests between October 2019 through March 2020.

In The People’s Revolt: Rewriting The Future, we focus on a possible revolution led by the people and the question of what constitutes a significant change for a country that wants to rewrite its own history while dreaming of a better future."

A/V Performance Showcase & Workshop

StillSuite follows the tradition of underground spaces in New York City’s nightlife open for audiovisual experimentations. A roster of multidisciplinary artists working with generative media, analog video, avant-garde cinema, electronic music, experimental sound and performance arts come together in a night that offers to fully transform Millennium Film Workshop’s new space into an immersive experience for the audience.

“Children of the Moon” is a program of selected work by Queer/Trans BIPOC artists from Latin America and Latin-American descent. As a form of redefining by undefining, “Children of the Moon” explores the organic nature of gender, identity and spirituality within the collective queer voice as a unified community – an experience rendered vulnerable to a heteronormative universe that sacrifices QTBIPOC bodies as a consequence of their manifestation.

"THE PEOPLES' REVOLT:  A NEW CONSTITUTION" CHILEAN EXPERIMENTAL FILMS OF RESISTANCE / (“LA REVOLUCIÓN DEL PUEBLO”: UNA NUEVA CONSTITUCION" CINE CHILENX EXPERIMENTAL DE RESISTENCIA)

The People’s Revolt: A New Constitution, is an experimental film and video screening inspired by the social movement that bursted on October 18, 2019 in Chile, and that led the country to a plebiscite to vote for a new constitution. The original program, The People's Revolt, premiered over 2 years ago at Anthology Film Archives.

Children of the Moon is a programme of selected works by queer/trans POC artists from Latin America and Latin-American descent. The nine short films showcase a variety of genres, including experimental, essay films, narrative and documentary approaches. Children of the Moon explores the organic nature of gender, identity and spirituality within the collective queer voice as a unified community. An experience rendered vulnerable to a heteronormative universe that sacrifices QTPOC bodies as a consequence of their manifestation.

For this first edition of 2021, corrient.es presents a program of four films and a conversation between Franci Durán and Anto Astudillo.

The artists chose the films in this program and, between image and text, they generated a dialogue between the politics and aesthetics of the image. 

Through images of bullfights in the early post-franco Spain, or of the traces of bullet holes fired in 1973 – that remain today in the neighboring walls of the Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago –, Franci and Anto’s program invites us to consider as much about their films’ processes and forms as it does about memory and time; observing, questioning, coming to terms with, and processing the ideas – and, often, the violence – ingrained in the materiality of our past, present, and future.

This series was developed throughout the month of June 2020 and is made up of two programs. “Nos han dado la tierra” corresponds to 6 films by Los Ingrávidos which Anto Astudillo has responded to as a continuous visual fabric. Followed by a second program added later in the month named "In response to current events". In this second part, Anto responds to films by Los Ingrávidos in relation to the current world events in which humanity is facing a crisis caused by a pandemic, while historical social movements are reactivated through chants for a decent life and the end of oppressive states. In both insinuated and sometimes more direct ways, the films and the texts are giving way to the birth of a new collectively written worldview.

"New experimental cinema in Chile exposes and criticizes the abuse of power coming from governmental authorities, the police, and the military by borrowing elements of journalistic photography and Chile’s unique documentary culture. However, this time nothing can stop the proliferation of new film and video work in a vertiginous media revolution.

This program – organized on the occasion of the current social uprising in Chile – presents a diverse selection of new experimental work made by Chilean filmmakers living in Chile and abroad. Many of the works included here have never been screened theatrically before."

"To inhabit is to create a bond between a body and the space that body occupies. The relationship can be physical, virtual or imaginary as in “thoughts that live in my mind”. Inhabiting can be the result of a space that opens itself to a given content. Here we can infer what makes a space habitable or uninhabitable; stable or unstable; permanent or transitory as well as what makes the subject adaptable. From the subject-space relationship derives time and limitation, when and where a space becomes a place. In our lives we reside and travel to many locations, common or private. We are constantly negotiating the land that sustains us, a land that can welcome us or push us away."

The New England Graduate Media Symposium is an annual, one-day event hosted by the Visual and Media Arts Department of Emerson College and organized by graduate students from the Film & Media Department (Anto Astudillo and Kim Forero-Arnias.) The purpose of this symposium is to create an occasion for graduate students to formally present media based work to each other, faculty, and professional colleagues. The symposium intends to foster the spirit and practice of exchange, collaboration, and intellectual community among members of the area’s various graduate programs, and to function as a springboard for future projects. This year the NEGMS had multimedia contemporary artist (site-specific multi-channel video installation, photography, digital media) and curator Almagul Menlibayeva as a guest speaker.
